Chinese President Xi Jinping cautioned U.S. President Donald Trump on Thursday that mishandling Taiwan could trigger clashes and conflicts between the world's two largest economies. Xi told Trump during their first Beijing summit session that the Taiwan question represents the most critical issue in U.S.-China ties, warning that independence and strait stability remain fundamentally incompatible. If not handled properly, Xi said the issue could put the entire relationship in great jeopardy. The two leaders opened a two-day meeting addressing trade, tariffs, Iran and regional security. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said Trump grasps Taiwan's complexities and maintains firm resolve on the matter. China views Taiwan as part of its territory, a claim the island's democratically elected government rejects. Washington has long recognized Beijing's position while sustaining robust ties with Taipei.
