Shipping volumes headed to Africa from the Far East jumped 25 percent, extending double-digit growth throughout 2026. Eastbound volumes stalled near zero expansion, according to the latest container traffic data. This divergence reflects contrasting market conditions on the Africa-Far East corridor. Forwarders attribute the imbalance to equipment shortages across African ports and congestion in Singapore, which have suppressed eastbound shipments since April. Economic improvements across African nations and rising internal and external investment fuel westbound strength. Carriers have kept rates steady in both directions despite the volume swings. Carriers are positioning Africa as a key growth pillar for coming years, though labor unrest in South Africa presents headwinds. Far East volumes have declined while Middle East shipments have nearly disappeared.
