BYD to Expand Car-Carrier Fleet as Export Demand Strains Capacity

BYD plans to bolster its car-carrier fleet next year as the Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer pursues overseas expansion. The world's largest new-energy vehicle producer expects to export 2 million units this year but acknowledged that insufficient shipping capacity is constraining growth. BYD projects monthly overseas shipments of 180,000-200,000 vehicles in the second half of 2026. The company currently operates eight car-carriers ranging from 7,000 to 9,200 car-equivalent units, plus two chartered vessels at 7,000 ceu each. Overseas sales comprised more than half of BYD's first-half revenue for the first time, accounting for 52 percent. Market observers indicate BYD may charter ten new 8,200 ceu vessels that Ray Car Carriers ordered at a Chinese shipyard. BYD also plans to expand its overseas manufacturing capacity to meet rising international demand.
