Canada's employment contracted by 41,700 positions in August, marking a reversal of recent labor market gains. Manufacturing emerged as the lone bright spot, posting notable job increases while other industries faced headwinds. The jobless rate remained steady at 6.4%, suggesting underlying labor market stability despite the monthly decline.

The freight sector showed mixed signals during the same period. Truckload spot rates posted their strongest quarterly surge in five years during Q2, with momentum extending into the third quarter as carrier capacity tightened. Refrigerated carriers reported particularly strong conditions, with improved freight selection allowing rate increases amid constrained capacity. West Coast states advanced plans for a zero-emission truck corridor along I-5, collaborating with Canadian and Mexican partners on charging infrastructure development.
