Container shipping alliances are increasingly developing specialized networks rather than competing directly on the same routes. This shift is evident in analysis of July 2026 port operations. On transpacific lanes, 54% of port-pair connections are served by a single alliance, rising to 65% on Asia-Europe routes. The Ocean Alliance operates the broadest transpacific network with 169 unique port pairs and 748 total connections. Premier Alliance achieves the highest frequency at 5 connections per pair from 116 unique pairs. MSC, operating independently, maintains 84 transpacific pairs with 2 average connections. On Asia-Europe, MSC expands to 241 unique port pairs, while Ocean covers 235. Gemini and Premier operate 106 and 122 pairs respectively on that lane. The limited overlap suggests carriers have deliberately carved out distinct market segments to reduce head-to-head competition.
