Trucking and air cargo markets are experiencing an unusual recovery. The growth is driven primarily by data center infrastructure and high-value parcel shipments, marking a departure from typical industry patterns.

Air cargo volume expanded 7.7% year-over-year in September, outpacing capacity growth of 2.7% and driving load factors higher by 2.2 percentage points. Parcel carriers are actively pursuing data center business, which offers premium margins compared to traditional segments.

Trans-Pacific and Asia-Europe container rates strengthened as import demand increased. However, trucking growth remains concentrated in select sectors rather than broad-based recovery. Capacity constraints continue pressuring the sector as driver availability tightens, with large carriers benefiting from sustained pricing power despite moderate overall demand expansion.

The current environment reflects structural shifts in demand patterns rather than cyclical recovery, reshaping competitive dynamics across freight modes.
