Diesel prices have reached an all-time high of $5 per gallon nationally. Geopolitical disruptions to the global fuel supply chain are driving the increase. Iranian tensions have restricted shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, while Ukrainian military operations targeting Russian refineries have further constrained fuel exports from the region. The last time diesel approached these levels was June 2022, when prices hit $5.81 following Russia's invasion of Ukraine. The spike carries significant economic consequences across American industries. Diesel fuels approximately 90% of the nation's 500,000 school buses, straining education budgets as the academic year begins. Farm equipment and long-haul trucking operations face mounting costs, threatening to increase food prices and consumer goods expenses. With inflation at 4% over the past year, rising energy costs are particularly impacting lower-income households already squeezed by elevated living expenses.
