The European Union is preparing to deploy safeguard measures targeting Chinese imports in chemicals, furniture and machinery in early 2027, according to officials briefed on the strategy. The move reflects mounting pressure on EU policymakers as Chinese export volumes remain robust while import demand weakens across the bloc. Germany, heavily dependent on export markets, faces particular headwinds as Beijing reduces purchases and U.S. tariff threats loom. EU Trade Commissioner Maroš Sefčovič recently held talks with Chinese Commerce Minister Wang Wentao in Beijing, signaling ongoing diplomatic engagement despite the anticipated import restrictions. The safeguard measures allow Brussels to manage trade flows while maintaining dialogue with Beijing.
