Inflation across the euro zone has accelerated to twice the European Central Bank's target, intensifying pressure on policymakers to raise interest rates further. Governing Council member Joachim Nagel signaled the ECB will likely increase borrowing costs in December as the inflation outlook deteriorates. Geopolitical tensions, including the Iran conflict, have partly fueled the surge by disrupting commodity markets and pushing up energy prices across the region. However, officials expect some relief ahead. Euro-area wage growth is projected to slow sharply in the third quarter of 2027. This wage moderation could ease price pressures and provide the ECB with flexibility in managing future rate decisions as economic conditions stabilize.
