The Federal Reserve held its benchmark interest rate steady Wednesday, declining to tighten monetary policy despite elevated price pressures. The central bank's rate-setting committee acknowledged that inflation remains a significant challenge, with consumer prices in September climbing 3.7% annually—an acceleration from the previous month. Energy price spikes have complicated the Fed's efforts to achieve price stability. While policymakers paused this week after raising rates in September for the first time in over three years, market participants widely anticipate another rate increase at December's meeting. Two committee members, including Fed Governor Lisa Cook and Cleveland Federal Reserve Bank President Beth Hammack, advocated for more aggressive action. Analysts expect the central bank will pursue additional hikes to temper demand and bring inflation under control.
