Transportation costs remained resilient in August despite seasonal pressures. Airfreight and ocean shipping both maintained elevated pricing levels. The Baltic Air Freight Index recorded virtually flat rates throughout the month, defying typical summer softness in the cargo market. Ocean freight pricing similarly remained elevated, holding near peak season levels despite modest declines from earlier in the year. Geopolitical tensions in the Middle East and their impact on energy markets have sustained these higher shipping costs. Central banks worldwide are raising interest rates for a second consecutive cycle, keeping borrowing costs elevated. While some regions including Egypt have seen inflation moderate unexpectedly, price pressures continue to constrain relief for freight operators and shippers seeking cost reductions.
