Maersk will retrofit a rotor sail system onto one of its 8,700-TEU container ships, entering the wind-assisted propulsion market for its ocean fleet. The 115-foot-tall sail, developed by London-based Anemoi Marine Technologies, will be installed on a Lima-class vessel by mid-2027. The vessel will be tested during scheduled Atlantic crossings. Each rotor sail unit reduces fuel consumption by approximately one ton daily and cuts CO₂ emissions by around three tons. Anemoi typically installs three to five sail units per vessel in its standard configurations. The technology fits within Maersk's broader decarbonization strategy, which prioritizes scaling bio- and e-methanol fuels and expanding its dual-fuel capacity. During 2025, the company added 10 methanol-capable vessels and completed efficiency retrofits on 230 owned ships and 150 time-chartered vessels. Maersk expects 25 dual-fuel vessels operational by 2027, eventually representing 25 percent of its fleet. The company has committed to achieving net-zero emissions by 2040.
