Samsung Files Record $186M Detention Claim Against CMA CGM

Samsung Electronics America has filed the largest complaint ever submitted to the Federal Maritime Commission, seeking $186 million from CMA CGM over disputed detention and demurrage charges. The claim surpasses the $161 million case brought against OOCL by Bed, Bath & Beyond's administrator last year. CMA CGM responded unusually quickly to the allegations, stating it believes it acted within contractual obligations and applicable regulations. The disputed transactions occurred during the Covid-19 pandemic period. Industry sources suggest the carrier's proactive defense reflects concern about the claim's magnitude setting a precedent for additional litigation. The French carrier declined further comment, citing ongoing proceedings.
