Major car-carrier operators are redirecting vessels to capitalize on China's accelerating vehicle export boom. Newbuilding orders are accelerating to meet demand. Wallenius Wilhelmsen expects Chinese vehicle exports to reach 12 million units this year, surpassing initial projections of 10 million as monthly shipments exceeded 1 million vehicles by June. The shift marks a dramatic reversal from pre-pandemic levels, when China exported fewer than 1 million vehicles annually. Current ro-ro capacity shortages of 2 million to 4 million container equivalent units have prompted operators to renegotiate existing contracts and commission additional tonnage. Ray Car Carriers ordered ten LNG dual-fueled 8,200 ceu vessels from Guangzhou. Tight availability over coming years reflects strong demand from Chinese exporters seeking longer-term charter agreements as Western automakers lose market share.
