Canada has imposed tariffs exceeding 50% on over 700 U.S. products and implemented outright import bans on motorcycles and certain dairy items. This escalates trade tensions as USMCA renegotiations with Mexico stalled during Washington talks this week over automotive content threshold requirements Mexico deems unrealistic.

Freight patterns are already shifting. Manufacturers facing bans are accelerating shipments ahead of deadlines, creating temporary volume surges followed by empty backhauls once restrictions take hold. Motorcycle dealers are front-loading orders to prevent stockouts.

The geographic reorientation favors east-west corridors within Canada over traditional north-south cross-border lanes. Traditional U.S.-Canada hauls are contracting while intra-Canadian moves expand, reducing asset utilization across established supply chains.

Automotive, metals and aluminum sectors face the steepest disruption, relying on just-in-time operations that lack buffers against tariff shocks. Mexico's concurrent tariffs on Chinese goods remain unmatched by promised American relief.
