Most trucking fleets fail to collect the full fuel surcharges their contracts entitle them to receive, creating margin leaks. The root cause is insufficient operational visibility, according to Magnus Technologies CEO Matt Cartwright. Carriers lack real-time systems to dynamically recalculate surcharges based on actual freight movements and fuel consumption. The company publishes diesel benchmarks using EIA indexes to help fleets compare contracted recovery rates against true per-load fuel costs. Magnus calculates fuel expenses using granular data including truck positioning, route mileage, and idle time, then cross-references customer contracts or published indexes to identify surcharge shortfalls. Many carriers possess contractual flexibility to adjust charges but cannot act without automated tools. Magnus offers a quote-to-cash platform integrating order management, EDI connections, fuel card data, and invoicing to enable dynamic recalculation. The software originated in automotive transport and now serves broader fleet segments seeking to protect yield.
