FAA Clears Boeing to Build 35 More 777 Freighters Through 2031

The Federal Aviation Administration has granted Boeing an emissions exemption for the 777 freighter, enabling continued production beyond the end of 2027. The approval permits Boeing to sell up to 35 additional aircraft eligible for Certificates of Airworthiness through January 1, 2031. Boeing filed its exemption request in December and sought approval by May 1. The decision addresses a critical supply shortage in the widebody freighter sector and bridges production until Boeing's next-generation 777-8F enters service. The 777-8F was originally slated for 2027 but has been delayed to 2028. The FAA acknowledged the practical benefits of permitting limited 777F production until its successor becomes available. Boeing delivered 35 777 freighters last year and 18 units through September 2026.
