Kodiak AI and DTL Transport, a Fresno-based carrier, signed a binding agreement to deploy 75 autonomous-equipped trucks on cross-country routes. DTL will own and operate the vehicles while paying Kodiak a per-mile fee for use of its Driver-as-a-Service autonomous system.
DTL will initially focus on two lanes Kodiak has already tested: between Dallas and El Paso, Texas, and on Interstate 20 connecting Dallas and Atlanta. The company selected these routes to help operate beyond federal hours-of-service constraints that limit solo drivers to 11 hours of driving within a 14-hour window.
The agreement follows a September pilot in which a Kodiak-equipped Class 8 truck transported perishable cargo 225 miles from Fresno to Los Angeles with a safety driver aboard, as required by California's testing permit. DTL has hauled dry and refrigerated freight for more than 36 years, specializing in team loads for grocery retailers.
