German exports fell unexpectedly in July, breaking a five-month streak of consecutive gains and signaling challenges for Europe's largest economy. The decline coincides with a sharp deterioration in global container shipping performance, which posted its steepest monthly drop in on-time deliveries since early 2021. Logistics providers attribute the slowdown partly to weakening import demand from Asia, where export volumes remain elevated. Germany's export-dependent economy faces additional pressure from slowing Chinese purchasing power and rising tariff threats from major trading partners. Elevated fuel costs are compounding challenges for freight operators and straining margins across the sector. Softer demand, shipping delays, and operational pressures suggest Europe's recovery momentum has weakened entering the third quarter.
