Great Southern Wood-NC Builds On-Site Rail to Cut Transport Expenses

Great Southern Wood-NC is expanding its North Carolina operations with a $40 million infrastructure overhaul that includes on-site rail capacity, marking a significant move to reduce freight costs across its supply chain.

The company developed the project in partnership with the North Carolina Railroad Company. By controlling rail access internally, Great Southern Wood-NC expects to handle more shipments directly from its facility, trim transportation expenses, and improve operational efficiency.

The investment reflects ongoing efforts among manufacturers to secure dedicated transport infrastructure as supply chain pressures persist. Wood products shippers have increasingly pursued direct rail connections to bypass congestion at regional hubs and negotiate better rates with carriers.
