The Pacific Maritime Association and International Longshore and Warehouse Union Local 26 have extended contract negotiations through May 4, forestalling a work stoppage at the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach. The extension provides additional bargaining time with Federal Mediation and Conciliation Services assistance but leaves the underlying dispute unresolved. Local 26 represents approximately 250 terminal security watchmen earning an average of $170,000 annually. These workers oversee facilities handling roughly 85% of Long Beach cargo and 33% at Los Angeles. Their previous agreement expired in July 2025. Though watchmen comprise only 2% of the local ILWU workforce, their strategic position could trigger broader disruptions if they strike, as other union members may honor picket lines. The PMA remains committed to reaching a fair agreement. Specific negotiation issues remain undisclosed.
