Flexport has achieved a 40% increase in freight volumes while expanding its workforce by just 5%, founder and CEO Ryan Petersen said. The divergence reflects the company's expanded deployment of automation tools across customs clearance, routing operations and internal engineering functions.
Customs classification remains the most heavily regulated segment of Flexport's business. The company's new classification tool suggests 10-digit tariff codes and links relevant CBP rulings to each suggestion. However, a licensed customs broker must manually review and approve each suggestion before filing.
Flexport's customs technology suite earned recognition on Time magazine's Best Inventions of 2026 list in October. A February audit of competitor brokers revealed an average error rate of 20% in customs entries. Petersen reported Flexport's own error rate at 0.2%, attributing competitor errors partly to tariff volatility in 2025.
