Trailer leasing utilization has reached all-time highs, eclipsing even pandemic-era peaks. Supply constraints, not freight volume increases, are reshaping the market. Older equipment operators are exiting the sector, leaving remaining carriers competing for newer trailers from leasing companies. The tightest segment involves trailers aged 10 years or newer, as newer units become scarce. Demand shifted to older equipment after the 0-to-5-year-old inventory was fully absorbed. Manufacturing underinvestment over three years has compounded the shortage, forcing carriers to extend equipment lifecycles beyond typical five-year retirement periods. Flatbed trailers face particularly acute pressure. Demand intensified during May-June when customer conversations about third and fourth-quarter needs turned decidedly optimistic. Premier is purchasing equipment through the fourth quarter—atypical for the season—and placing orders well into next year in anticipation of strong demand ahead.
