Lufthansa Cargo Acquires German Ground Handler LUG to Boost Infrastructure

Lufthansa Cargo has agreed to purchase LUG air cargo handling GmbH, expanding its ground operations across Germany's three largest aviation hubs. The acquisition immediately increases capacity at Frankfurt, Munich and Hamburg airports while opening new revenue channels through third-party airline customers. LUG, currently owned by the Dettmer Group, operates approximately 538,000 square feet of warehouse space and employs 400 staff members. The purchase remains subject to antitrust approval and regulatory clearance. LUG will maintain independent operations with no service disruptions for existing customers. The move supports Lufthansa Cargo's infrastructure modernization strategy, complementing a $682 million cargo terminal development at Frankfurt featuring high-bay storage and automated transport systems. The carrier ranks 14th globally by traffic volume and operates 18 widebody freighters while managing belly capacity across five sister airlines.
