Silk Way West Launches Freighter Service to Navi Mumbai

Navi Mumbai International Airport welcomed its first Silk Way West freighter flight on September 15, with a Boeing 777 carrying approximately 90 tonnes of import cargo. The Baku-based carrier's service establishes fresh air cargo connectivity between the Indian airport and Central Asian, European and West Asian markets. NMIA, operated by a joint venture between Adani Group and the Airports Authority of India, has accelerated all-cargo expansion since launching freighter operations in August following the airport's December opening. Hong Kong Air Cargo and Cathay Cargo are expected to shift operations to the facility as Mumbai's Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport undergoes a 10-month suspension of freighter activities. The closure enables CSMI to conduct complete reconstruction of its cargo aircraft apron. Navi Mumbai's emerging role as a western India cargo gateway is solidifying as carriers redirect services from the primary Mumbai facility.
