Small trucking fleets are abandoning equipment purchases in favor of short-term repair financing, marking a significant shift in how carriers manage their operations. According to Dave Gilbert, founder and CEO of National Funding, rising maintenance costs, fuel expenses, insurance premiums and elevated used truck prices have made new equipment purchases economically unfeasible for many small carriers.
The cost pressures have fundamentally altered fleet financing patterns. National Funding, which has served trucking businesses for nearly 30 years, is seeing demand concentrated in shorter-duration bridge loans spanning 60, 90 and 180 days. This represents a shift away from multi-year equipment financing previously common during expansion cycles.
Repair financing now dominates customer requests, surpassing traditional vehicle acquisition loans. Gilbert stressed that maintaining existing equipment has become the priority, noting that downtime poses the greatest financial risk for fleets. The qualification process typically begins with a one-page application and bank cash-flow documentation.
