Spot truckload rates have climbed 41% year-over-year through October, forcing shippers to reassess freight strategies after entering 2026 unprepared for significant cost inflation. Contract rates have reset 10% to 12% higher across major indices, prompting shippers to explore alternatives. Demand indicators are strengthening after three years of deflationary pressure. Consumption has returned to pre-COVID levels with modest growth, industrial production is rising, and the ATA Truckload Volume Index is approaching equilibrium heading into the fourth quarter. Two strategies are gaining traction: shippers are migrating freight from truckload to intermodal rail and increasing adoption of shared truckload solutions. Shared truckload models enable multiple shippers to consolidate freight on single trucks without terminal handling, with costs based on actual trailer space utilized rather than full vehicle commitment.
