The truckload market is presenting contradictory indicators heading into the fourth quarter. Spot rates climbed to $3 on the National Truckload Index, representing more than 10% above late-August lows and roughly 50% higher than year-ago levels. Yet contracted load acceptance has declined nearly 3% to 9,574, falling below the 12-month average of 9,872.
The disconnect persists despite rejection rates declining alongside accepted tenders. Rejection rates dropped from 14%, a pattern that typically signals weakening demand and should pressure rates downward. Timing differences between contracted tenders, typically placed three to four days ahead of pickup, and spot loads averaging under two days of lead time may account for part of the divergence. However, the gap has persisted throughout September, suggesting other factors are at play.
Sharply elevated diesel costs through the month strain carrier cash flow. Expenses mount before revenue materializes post-delivery.
