A321 Freighter Conversions Struggle to Gain Traction in Weak Narrowbody Market

The Airbus A321-200 passenger-to-freighter conversion has failed to capture significant market share despite initial optimism in 2020. Industry data shows just 85 A321-200 conversions have been completed through August 2026, compared to 265 Boeing 737-800 conversions. Storage rates remain persistently high, with 42% of the converted A321 fleet idle as of August. The aircraft, positioned as a 757-200 freighter replacement, has been hampered by oversupply of competing 737-800 conversions, weakening overall narrowbody freighter demand, and recovery in passenger markets providing additional belly capacity. Operator failures and technical engine challenges have compounded difficulties. Boeing-centric airport infrastructure and the A321's lower payload and range have prevented it from displacing 757-200 freighters as originally envisioned.
