Amazon is challenging a National Labor Relations Board decision requiring the company to negotiate with unionized workers at its Staten Island facility, known as JFK8. The NLRB issued its bargaining order in April, nearly 4.5 years after workers voted to unionize under the Amazon Labor Union, which later affiliated with the International Brotherhood of Teamsters Local 1. Both sides filed competing briefs with the Fifth Circuit on October 16. Amazon pursued narrow procedural grounds questioning the NLRB's authority, while the Teamsters submitted a 115-page brief revisiting the union's entire history and disputes with Amazon. The case marks Amazon's only unionization loss at a U.S. facility. A separate unionization effort at another Staten Island warehouse failed the following year, and Amazon defeated a 2021 organizing drive at its Bessemer, Alabama facility.
