These skateboard units integrate powered axles and onboard batteries, compressing the gap between passive 53-foot trailers ($50,000 to $60,000) and self-driving freight systems faster than industry observers anticipated. Built for autonomy from inception rather than retrofitted with sensors, the skateboard concept eliminates driver-seat economics and threatens traditional drop-trailer viability. Fleets deploying autonomous units at customer docks avoid hourly driver costs, allowing vehicles to cycle between loading, transport, and unloading continuously throughout operating hours. Commercial autonomous operations already exist through Kodiak and Aurora, though full-scale adoption has not yet accelerated significantly. Warehouse automation and remote monitoring represent transitional steps toward completely autonomous supply chain links.
