Cartel Logistics Coordinator Sentenced to Nearly 19 Years for Drug Trafficking Network

Roberto Lopez, 46, received an 18-year, 10-month prison sentence for managing a trucking-based cocaine distribution operation that supplied major U.S. cities including Atlanta and Memphis. Lopez coordinated weekly shipments totaling up to 300 kilograms of cocaine while overseeing cash loads exceeding $1 million each destined for Mexico. His responsibilities included paying stash house operators, repackaging currency, and arranging cross-border transfers for cartel leadership. Federal wiretaps captured communications regarding incoming drug loads and proceeds movement. The operation also moved more than 1,000 rifles, 100 to 200 converted machine guns, and tactical equipment including silencers and night vision goggles. Lopez pleaded guilty in May to cocaine trafficking and money laundering conspiracies. Authorities captured him in Mexico City on June 27, 2024, after he evaded them for over a decade using aliases. Five years of supervised release will follow his incarceration.
