Daimler Truck, Volvo Group Back Hydrogen Push With NextGenH2 Launch

Daimler Truck and seven other major European companies pledged Tuesday to commercialize hydrogen trucking by 2030, citing lessons from battery-electric deployment. The consortium includes Volvo Group, Toyota, Bosch, Air Liquide, TotalEnergies, TEAL Mobility and MB Energy. They aim to ensure fuel infrastructure, stations and vehicles develop simultaneously across Europe. Daimler Truck will deploy 100 units of its Mercedes-Benz NextGenH2 Truck from late 2026, with 50 already sold. The vehicle achieves over 1,000 kilometers per tank and carries 1.3 metric tons more payload than Daimler's battery-electric eActros 600. The company is investing mid-three-digit millions in hydrogen trucks through 2030 and plans hydrogen combustion engine launches next year. Europe operates 6.2 million trucks consuming 60 million metric tons of diesel annually, representing roughly 500 terawatt-hours of electricity equivalent—Germany's entire yearly electrical output.
