Construction has commenced on the Delaware Container Terminal, a $669 million maritime facility that state officials expect will quadruple the state's cargo-handling capacity upon completion. The 137-acre project sits on former industrial land in Edgemoor along the Delaware River and represents Delaware's largest infrastructure investment in maritime services. Permits reissued in April 2026 cleared the way for waterside construction, including channel dredging to 45 feet, seawall installation, and foundational work on the all-electric facility. A public-private partnership between state-owned Diamond State Port Corp. and operator Enstructure will manage the terminal. Once operational, the facility and upgraded Port of Wilmington operations will combine under the Port Delaware brand, achieving combined annual capacity of 1.6 million TEUs. The 45-foot berth depth will accommodate post-Panamax vessels carrying up to 16,000 TEUs, positioning the terminal among the East Coast's top tier.
