Elevated fuel costs threaten to push additional trucking capacity out of service heading into the fourth quarter. This threat emerges even as spot linehaul rates remain more than 40% above year-ago levels. The disconnect stems from carrier operating margins that lag significantly behind previous market peaks, leaving fleets vulnerable to further profitability erosion. Recent spot rate softening reflects mini-bid activity that has re-rated contract lanes rather than genuine demand weakness, though underlying consumer spending shows signs of strain from high fuel and food prices. Transportation spending is approaching all-time highs, but the surge masks a troubling reality: much of the increase reflects elevated diesel costs rather than genuine freight demand growth. Fourth-quarter peak season indicators currently suggest a muted outcome similar to last year, with meaningful volume acceleration unlikely until just before Thanksgiving. The Cass Freight Shipment Index recently posted its first year-over-year positive print in approximately 40 weeks.
