Greenbrier Cos. posted a sharp earnings decline in its fiscal fourth quarter as weak freight-railcar demand and facility costs pressured profitability. However, order activity showed improvement heading into 2027. Net earnings fell to $8.7 million, or 27 cents per diluted share, while revenue dropped 22% to $591 million. Excluding facility-rationalization charges, core earnings reached 39 cents per share, missing analyst consensus of 80 cents. The manufacturer received 3,400 new railcar orders worth $600 million and delivered 3,600 units during the period. Order backlog climbed to 14,000 railcars valued at $2.1 billion, marking the first sequential increase since fiscal 2024. Management cited tariff uncertainty as a factor delaying customer investment decisions, particularly for tank cars. The leasing segment expanded, with the owned fleet growing 23% to 20,900 railcars and 98% utilization.
