Maersk Claims Top Intra-Asia Capacity Spot, Surpassing Cosco

Maersk has displaced Cosco as the leading container carrier in intra-Asia shipping by deployed capacity. The Danish carrier operates 108 vessels with an average size of 3,176 teu, generating total deployed capacity exceeding 340,000 teu. Maersk's expansion includes new Asian shuttle services feeding major east-west corridors through a hub-and-spoke model. Intra-Asia capacity grew 6% in mid-August, slightly outpacing the global container fleet's 5% expansion. The trade supports more than 80 active carriers, though the market remains dominated by mainline operators controlling 63% of capacity despite operating fewer ships. Regional and feeder operators account for 37% of deployed capacity, with smaller average vessel sizes of 1,338 teu compared to mainline carriers' 2,699 teu average.
