Pentagon Investigates Diversion of F-35 Components to Hong Kong

U.S. lawmakers and the Pentagon are investigating the rerouting of a shipment containing unserviceable F-35 Lightning II fighter jet components from Australia to Hong Kong while in transit across the Pacific. The parts were being transported by a Lockheed Martin intermediary for repair in the United States when the diversion occurred. The incident's cause remains unclear, with investigators unable to determine whether the reroute resulted from human error or an intentional act. Among the diverted equipment was an F-35 canopy, the cockpit enclosure housing stealth technology and low-observable design features. Security concerns intensified given Hong Kong's status as a Chinese special administrative region, potentially exposing sensitive manufacturing data to Beijing. The component location and current custody remain unknown. Pentagon leadership and State Department officials began briefing congressional national-security committees in June. Additional briefings are scheduled as the investigation continues.
