Approximately 250 port security officers at Los Angeles and Long Beach could strike as soon as Sunday, jeopardizing operations at the nation's largest containerized cargo complex. The International Longshore and Warehouse Union Local 26 has authorized strike action, which the Pacific Maritime Association confirmed. Though the watchmen comprise just 2% of ILWU personnel at the two ports, they staff terminals handling 85% of Long Beach's throughput and 33% of Los Angeles' cargo. Other union members are expected to honor picket lines, potentially shutting down vessel, yard, and gate operations. The previous contract expired in July 2025. Negotiations spanning more than a year have failed to resolve differences between employers and the union, though federal mediators remain involved. The PMA's latest offer includes wage increases and pension enhancements for workers currently earning over $170,000 annually with full employer-paid benefits.
