Truck Transportation Adds 4,800 Jobs in Monthly Surge

Truck transportation employment climbed 4,800 positions to 1,470,300 in the latest labor market data, marking the sector's highest job count since October. The gain coincided with broader employment strength across the economy. However, year-over-year comparisons reveal persistent weakness, with truck transportation still trailing by approximately 10,000 jobs compared to 12 months prior.

Long-distance truckload driver positions reached 501,400 in July, up nearly 5,000 since January but down from 505,300 a year ago. LTL employment held relatively flat with 100 jobs added between June and July to reach 247,100, remaining 2,000 below year-ago levels. Warehouse employment declined 2,600 positions to 1,837,400, continuing a downward trajectory and falling 32,000 jobs from the previous year.

Industry observers cautioned against reading too much into single-month movements. David Spencer, vice president of market intelligence at Arrive Logistics, cited April's 5,000-job surge followed by declines that mostly offset the gains. However, Spencer noted that recent stability in truckload spot rate volatility provides context suggesting potential sector strength. If employment growth continues, it could signal a shift in carrier priorities from replacing aging equipment toward driver benefits and wages.
