The truckload industry's capacity correction is far from complete, with carrier executives signaling additional fleet exits ahead. A regulatory crackdown initiated last year combined with sustained economic headwinds has already eliminated numerous small and midsize operators. Recent diesel price increases have further strained carriers lacking fuel surcharge mechanisms. The Supreme Court's broker liability ruling has forced shippers and brokers to heighten scrutiny when selecting carriers. Schneider National's president noted that thousands of drivers entered the sector during the previous expansion cycle without proper training or lawful authority. Stricter oversight of electronic logging device providers and heightened safety rating requirements are removing substandard operators from the market. Werner Enterprises executives indicated the capacity correction may extend several more innings, with broker liability standards continuing to tighten carrier selection.
