The industry's capacity correction remains in early stages, with carrier executives warning of further deterioration ahead. A regulatory crackdown launched last year combined with sustained economic weakness has already eliminated numerous small and midsize operators. Diesel fuel price spikes have particularly squeezed smaller fleets lacking fuel surcharge mechanisms. The Supreme Court's broker liability ruling has introduced additional pressure, forcing shippers and brokers to conduct stricter vetting of transportation partners. Schneider National's leadership highlighted thousands of drivers who entered the market during the previous boom with substandard training and unlawfully obtained authority. Tighter oversight of electronic logging device providers and the closure of unaccredited driver training schools have further narrowed market entry. New capacity now faces heightened scrutiny from shippers reluctant to tender loads to unproven carriers without established safety records.
