President Donald Trump said Friday the U.S. could cease trading with Mexico and other nations running large trade deficits with Washington.
Trump cited a $195 billion annual trade deficit with Mexico, calling the country dispensable to American economic interests. He made comparable claims about Canada, estimating $60 billion to $90 billion in annual savings from ending trade, and the European Union, citing a roughly $200 billion deficit.
Mexico remains one of America's largest trading partners, supplying critical vehicles, machinery, electronics and agricultural goods. Trump tempered his rhetoric by noting positive relations with Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum, stating he respects her significantly.
The remarks accompanied pressure on the Federal Reserve to cut interest rates, with Trump linking potential trade restrictions to monetary policy decisions.
