Aurora Innovation and Charger Logistics signed a nonbinding memorandum Monday to deploy up to 500 Aurora Driver-powered trucks, with deliveries scheduled across 2027 and 2028. The agreement expands on Charger's July contract to operate driverless hauling between Dallas and Laredo, Texas. Under the new terms, Charger will own the vehicles and pay Aurora for autonomous driving services through its Driver as a Service model. The deal supports Aurora's strategy to operate more than 30,000 driverless trucks by 2030. Aurora expects to surpass 200 autonomous trucks by the end of February, running approximately six weeks behind schedule. The company still targets over 1,000 trucks operational by year-end 2027. Under Driver as a Service, Aurora generates 85 cents per mile or more on trucks expected to log 250,000 annual miles. Hirschbach Motor Lines signed a similar 500-truck nonbinding MOU in April under the same ownership framework.
