Customs and Border Protection seized more than 1,000 pounds of methamphetamine concealed within a commercial produce shipment at the Texas border on October 30. Officers inspecting a tractor-trailer hauling leeks discovered 909 packages of the drug hidden among cylindrical bundles, with an estimated street value of $984,063. A canine team alerted inspectors during the routine screening, leading to the discovery and subsequent testing that confirmed the substance's identity. The seizure represents part of Operation Southern Surge, an expanded enforcement initiative launched in October across multiple South Texas border crossings. The operation deployed additional personnel, canine units, and advanced screening equipment to combat smuggling activity. Through early November, Operation Southern Surge resulted in 89 arrests, seizures exceeding 1,600 pounds of narcotics, 15 firearms, over 3,000 ammunition rounds, and more than $360,000 in illicit currency.
