Small and midsize businesses are fragmenting procurement across multiple regions and accelerating order placement. They navigate compounding supply chain pressures in 2026. A benchmark survey of more than 2,500 companies worldwide found supplier lead-time volatility ranked as the top inventory challenge for 29% of respondents, trailed by raw material costs at 23%, freight expenses at 22% and demand fluctuations at 21%. When allowing multiple selections, lead-time concerns affected 77% of companies, freight costs 72%, input costs 66% and demand shifts 57%. Unlike 2025 when tariffs dominated strategy, this year's chaos stems from converging disruptions including shipping-route instability, material inflation, demand unpredictability and inconsistent supplier performance. Among SMBs tracking sourcing from the U.S., China, Canada and Mexico, those drawing from at least two regions climbed to 55% in 2026 from 49% last year, signaling heightened supply chain fragmentation ahead.
