Container spot rates on trans-Pacific routes held steady last week at $8,311 per forty-foot equivalent unit, signaling the market has peaked and will likely soften through the remainder of 2026. The plateau leaves rates substantially elevated compared to pre-Hormuz crisis benchmarks. Asia-North Europe routes diverged sharply, climbing 6.8% to $3,698 per FEU, while Mediterranean lanes rose 5.2% to $2,963 per FEU. The increases reversed months of declines since July despite additional vessel capacity returning to service following Red Sea shipping corridor reopenings. Strong demand from Asia to Europe, with volumes up 12%, has supported the rate gains even as fleet constraints eased. East Coast rates remained more than three times those on Asia to North Europe lanes. The divergence underscores that capacity relief alone will not drive uniform rate declines across global trade lanes.
